What actually degrades a peptide

Four things do most of the damage, and they compound each other:

  • Heat speeds up every degradation reaction, so a vial left at room temperature ages faster than one held cold.
  • Light, especially UV, drives photo-oxidation of sensitive residues.
  • Moisture lets hydrolysis proceed, which is why a dry, sealed powder outlasts an exposed one.
  • Temperature swings are the quiet one: each warm-then-cool cycle stresses the molecule, and for material already in solution a freeze-thaw cycle is worse than steady cold.

None of this is exotic chemistry. It is the ordinary reason a peptide that tested clean on its Certificate of Analysis can read differently weeks later if it was stored carelessly.

Dry powder versus solution

Most research peptides are supplied lyophilized (freeze-dried) because a dry solid holds up better than a solution over long archival storage. Hydrolysis, oxidation, and aggregation all need water or molecular mobility to proceed, and the dry state suppresses them. Kept cold, dry, and dark, lyophilized material stays stable for a long stretch, which is why powder is the industry default and why most freezer-storage advice is written around it.

A peptide already in solution will not last as well on that timescale. That is not a defect, it is chemistry. In-solution material is refrigerated at 2-8°C and used inside a set window rather than banked for years.   • Label and date everything. Stability is a function of time as much as temperature, so a vial with no date is a vial you cannot fully trust.
  • Start from verified material. A batch-specific Certificate of Analysis tells you the purity you began with, which is the baseline every later measurement is judged against.
