Why researchers use the fragment, not the whole hormone

α-MSH is a 13-residue hormone that does several things at once, pigmentation-linked melanocortin signaling included. If your question concerns only a slice of that activity, working with the full hormone is awkward: too many things happen simultaneously to attribute any single effect.

KPV is the C-terminal piece the research keeps. Choosing it over the whole hormone buys three practical things:

  • Specificity. It narrows the range of signaling you are actually looking at.
  • Synthesis. A three-residue peptide is simple to make and to verify analytically.
  • Interpretation. With fewer moving parts, an observed effect is easier to attribute.

What the literature actually examines

It is worth separating what the primary literature examines from what gets claimed downstream, because searches for "KPV peptide benefits" return a great many lists the published work does not support.

The studies themselves are in-vitro and preclinical: cultured cells and animal models. They cluster around melanocortin-linked signaling and the downstream events tied to inflammatory regulation, and the recurring themes are:
